April 15, 2012 – Skyline Steel in Belpre, Ohio is a long-time producer of retaining walls for highway construction. These walls are made of steel sheet piles created from cold-rolled steel with a 65,000# PSI yield strength, which puts significant demand on all the equipment involved in the manufacturing operations.
Skyline had been experiencing issues with its current straightener, affecting the company’s productivity. Recognizing the need for a more reliable system, Skyline turned to COE Press Equipment, known for the robust design of its SESCO Products Group machines. COE personnel analyzed Skyline’s application and operation, considering the material width of 48" and the material thickness range, which varies from 0.170" with a 65,000 PSI yield strength to the extremely demanding 0.535" with a 55,000 PSI yield strength. Additionally, it considered the desired payoff rate of 70 fpm.
Whereas Skyline’s original straightener was using 3.5" – 4.0" diameter straightening rolls, COE’s design employs 8" diameter rolls. The (7) straightening rolls are configured in a 3 over 4 arrangement. All rolls are backed up to prevent deflection while straightening heavy gauge and high strength steels. Additionally, the straightener has 10" pinch rolls that are also backed up to maintain rigidity across the roll face when performing "pull-off" operations of extreme coil weights. A 150 HP AC variable speed drive package delivers the horsepower and torque required to effectively straighten the .525" thick steel.
The new COE-SESCO power straightener is designed with many enhanced features over conventional straighteners for effective reliability and maintainability. The extreme force required to effectively straighten these thick materials is transmitted by SESCO’s unique "eccenter" cam arrangement and heavy-duty hydraulic motors. The COE-SESCO straightener has helped to eliminate much of the downtime the plant had been experiencing, helping Skyline improve reliability and increase productivity.

COE Press Equipment has announced its latest compact Cradle-Straightener-Feeder (CSF) design featuring an improved material threading process and a hydraulic pilot release mechanism for better press feeding accuracy. COE's compact CSF designs are well-suited for medium to heavy gauge applications (.040" - .375" ) in space-constrained areas.
The CSF lines work to uncoil material by holding the coil's outer diameter while accurately indexing the material to the press with a combination piloting straightener-feeder. Where traditional CSFs unwind the coil from the bottom, COE's design unwinds from the top, which produces a small slack loop for improved straightening-feeding performance.
For improved feeding accuracy and tool life, the new design relies upon a hydraulic pilot release function, which effectively releases both the feeding rolls and straightening rolls. This is an improvement over traditional CSF"s, which typically do not effectively raise the straightening rolls. These systems can process coil widths up to 60" wide, coil O.D.'s up to 63" , and coil weights up to 20,000 lbs.
Standard features include two driven coil support rollers, two exit pinch rolls (3.93" dia.) and seven straightening rolls (3.93" dia.). All rolls are synchronously driven. Also standard is hydraulic opening/closing of the Alligator" style straightening head for material threading and roll cleaning, a hold down arm with a motorized endwheel, and a snubber/peeler for hands-free material threading.
Additionally, COE's updated ServoMaster 3 Controller provides 500-job memory storage, "on-the-fly" length micro adjustment, batch control, bi-lingual programming, feed interrupt-continue interlocks, and many more efficiency enhancing features.
