Tier One Automotive:
Oscillating Shear/Roll Feed
System
SESCO
Products Group Provides Oscillating Shear, Die and Roll Feed to Major
Tier One Automotive Supplier
Coe Press
Equipment Corporations SESCO Products Group (SPG) has installed
a unique in-press oscillating shear, die and electronic roll feed at a
major Tier One automotive supplier in Detroit, MI to meet the companys
stringent demands for class A blanks and flexibility to handle various
blank sizes.
The company
is a multi-conglomerate, European-based company with steel production
and fabricating operations located throughout the world. It is a Tier
One supplier to the automotive manufacturing companies. At this Detroit
plant, it provides coil stock for blanking and slitting operations for
automotive parts directly to automotive plants as well as its own production
stamping facilities.
SPGs
oscillating shear and die package is part of a full coil processing/blanking
line that includes a coil transporter, coil storage turnstile, coil reel,
precision leveler, feeder, electro-static oiler, shear and blank stacker.
The package
included an oscillating shear, die that can rotate a maximum of ±30°;
blank eject conveyor, dampening control adapter, shear bump
die design and self-centering adjustable stock guides.
For oscillation,
SPGs oscillating shear die uses a rack and pinion with servomotor
for movement. It incorporates a bump die design for operation
in a conventional straight-side press and includes a dampening feature
to allow higher strokes per minute. Cycle times are determined by the
press, feed, and shear oscillation speeds. All adjustments to the angular
movement of the die can be controlled and programmed at the operator console.
Maximum
output of the die is 60 SPM at zero degree oscillation or straight cut
mode. The overall blade length is 84 and the approximate tool size
is 112 right to left and 120 front to back. The shut height
is 33.12 and the material thickness range is from 0.020 to
0.110. The cut angle and production rate ranges from ±30°
at 30 SPM ±5° at 50 SPM. The minimum coil width it can handle
is 16.
SPGs
electronic roll feed is designed to process a coil width range from 16
to 76, feed length range from 24 to 186 and provide
a line speed of 300 FPM. The feed rolls are hardened and ground and provided
with a controlled matte-chrome finish to minimize slippage and foreign
material build up.
Besides
the oscillating shear and roll feed, SPG also installed a unique threading
table and two material support catenaries to feed the coil stock into
and out-of the loop pit. The high production speeds and feed rates demanded
a great amount of coil to be fed, the loop pit had to be 18 deep
and the catenaries were provided with hold downs. This called for an unusual
threading table design. Most threading tables are designed with two halves
split down the center (like bomb-bay doors on an airplane) and join together
to support the coil being threaded to the roll feed. When the table opens
to allow the coil to loop into the pit, the table halves retract to above
ground level height.
Since this
companys loop pit was so deep, this conventional design couldnt
be used. SPG built a special thread table that moved by a chain drive
mounted to a wall from the bottom of the loop pit to the top. This design
also was effective in keeping the coil, in a tail-out condition, from
being damaged in the pit while it was being fed into the press. The table
rises to lift the tail strip as it is being fed.
